HAMILTON COUNTY, TN (WRCB) - Severe weather Tuesday morning resulted in road closures all across the area. On Lookout Mountain a large mud slide on Ochs Highway blocked the road for several hours, forcing drivers to find an alternate route.

"It was pouring down rain, pretty heavy," says Diane Walker.

Like many people, the stormy weather was a bit of an obstacle for Diane Walker on her morning commute to work. When she rolled up to the purple daisy cafe, there was yet, another obstacle.

"There was road work being done where there was a mud slide right up the street here."

Around 5:00 Tuesday morning, the heavy rain was too much for a section of Lookout Mountain to bear.

"A lot of mud and rocks," says TDOT supervisor Chris Smith.

Mud and rocks covered Ochs Highway, creating a thick mess. It made for a busy morning for TDOT supervisor Chris Smith and his crew.

"We had some flooding and we had some trees down and then we had this mud slide," he says.

As soon as daylight broke, they brought in the heavy equipment.

"We waited until it got day light. it's safer to work that way. And it's pushing mud around so it takes a while to get it up."

After several hours of shoveling mud and picking up rock, they reopened the highway.

"We got most of it up with a front-end loader and fixed the ditch so the drainage would be correct again," says Smith.

Walker is glad the hard-working crew cleared the road quickly.

"Any time there's any kind of road work around here it can affect our business and hit has in the past, so yeah, that was a concern of mine," she says.

Walker says she is looking forward to sunnier days ahead.

"I think it's going to move on out. I think the worst is over with and it's supposed to be sunshine later on in the week! It's going to be great!"

On average, TDOT says 6,800 vehicles travel Ochs Highway every day. It says it really has not had too much trouble with the section of roadway before so it will be keeping a close eye on the section of rock in the coming days.

UPDATE: After a mudslide blocked the SR-58 portion of Ochs Highway early Tuesday morning, the roadway has been re-opened.

TDOT crews had to wait until daylight to begin clearing the area, according to officials.
