Red Cross urges people to prepare for severe storms
CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -
Getting you and your family prepared for what could happen, could be the difference of life or death.
"Our disaster services team is prepared. We're monitoring the weather, what situation might be coming our way. We've done a call down to all volunteers to be on standby," said Executive Director, Julia Wright.
The American Red Cross is prepared for severe weather, but want to make sure you're ready for what could happen outside your window.
"We want them to get out their disaster plan and be thinking about where they're going to go for a safe place," said Wright.
The sound of your weather radio could be the one that saves your life. But if you're not ready for the storm, you may sleep through it.
"You can do that by having your weather radio, having fresh batteries in your weather radio," said Wright.
Having a basic preparedness kit ready isn't a bad idea either, complete with water, food, flash light, first aid kit, medications, multi-purpose tool, personal hygiene items, copies of personal documents and your cell phone with a charger.
"It makes the transition a little easier and the more prepared they are the easier it is on all of the agencies," said Wright.
Wright says it's simple and all things you can do five minutes before you turn out the lights.
"Being prepared does save lives," said Wright.
The American Red Cross has a great app that you can download specifically for tornadoes for your iPhone and Droid that will give you tips on what to do before, during and after severe weather.
