Woman gets 20 years in prison for abusing infant
CLARKSVILLE, TN (AP) - A Montgomery County woman has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for abusing her infant cousin.
The Leaf-Chronicle (http://leafne.ws/1EOZxVI) reports that 26-year-old Savannah Humphrey of Clarksville was sentenced in Judge Mike R. Jones' court on Friday. She was convicted in August of aggravated child abuse and aggravated child neglect.
According to court records, Humphrey was babysitting her cousin, Evianna Burke, on June 12, 2013 when the abuse occurred. The child was 3 months old.
Humprhey's actions caused the child severe neurological damage, retinal hemorrhaging and bleeding to the brain. Evianna, now 20 months old, suffers from cerebral palsy, is blind and cannot sit up, crawl or speak.
At the sentencing hearing, Humphrey apologized for her actions.
Evianna's mother, Lelia Burke, said she forgives Humphrey, but can't forget what happened.
