Erlanger to get upgrade on children's hospital

Posted: Updated:
CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) - Erlanger is the third largest hospital in the state of Tennessee, giving medical care to everyone big or small.

"We really provide all of the pediatric for all of East Tennessee, both for trauma and critical care medical for our children," said Kevin Spiegel, President and CEO of Erlanger.

But now their currently children's facility is falling short and they're looking to re-build to care for children of today and the future.

"What we are really trying to do is bring this hospital and the medical care that we provide to our children to the next level," said Spiegel.

So that their facilities match their expertise

And that families and children can come together and heal together.

But the children aren't the only ones on their list of to-dos.

"It's more than just children, it's about our whole vision for Erlanger," said Spiegel.

That would include a new women's facility and the current children's hospital being transformed into a neuroscience hospital.

Two teams made up of architects and contractors had two different visions they brought in, but both agreed on a few things, like more green space, restaurants, shopping, and even housing needed to be added to the plans.

"We're trying to make the proposal we've come up with more patient focused and patient centered and accessible," said Burn Sears, dreamBIG.

"This is a chance to look at the medical part of this and how Erlanger can look to continue that in terms of creating what we call a wellness or medical district," said Bob Farrow, Chatalyst.

Spiegel says it's all a part of a bigger picture to make Chattanooga a better place. "That's only part of it. The other is a development of 3rd, of getting the community together to start redeveloping in the whole area with the children's hospital and UTC."

A group will be chosen in the next week.

We're told they're looking to span this project over a 5-year period.
