Chattanooga Symphony and Opera members perform with Yo-Yo Ma

Thursday night's performance at Chattanooga's Tivoli Theatre was one to remember.

World renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma took the stage with members of the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera.

“Not only a master of the instrument, but also a great humanitarian,” CSO Assistant Concert Master Josh Holritz said.

For many members, it was an opportunity that comes only once in a lifetime.

“It actually has a very exposed flute part, and the flute gets to play a lot of duets with the cello,” CSO Principal Flute Kristen Holritz said.

Ma only performed one piece with the symphony, but it was one that CSO members took months preparing for.

“Studying the music ahead of time, listening to the piece, getting a copy of the score. Knowing what I'm playing as well as what the other instruments in the orchestra are playing,” Josh added.

Ma is a prominent soloist who has worked around the world and even appeared on Sesame Street and is described by many as a complete artist.

“He relates to anybody. I think anyone to sees him instantly relates to him,” CSO Concert Master Holly Mulcahy said.

Ma is one of the best-selling artists in the classical field.
