Running community at ease after rape suspect is arrested

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) - A 17-year-old was arrested on Wednesday, charged with the rape of a  69-year-old man.

His name is being withheld because he is a minor.

Many in the running community have been on high alert as they've gone on their jogs since the rape on Monday morning.

Caroline Clarkson was relieved to hear the suspect had been arrested; however she's still going to be careful when exercising in the North Shore.

"We moved to the North Shore area to be able to get out and walk to restaurants and walk around," said Clarkson. "Almost every evening I either go on a walk or on a run with my sister or by myself."

She never thought twice about her safety in her neighborhood until now.

"It's really sad that you can't go out and run and you have to worry about someone like the man who was caught," said Clarkson.

After a 69-year-old man was raped near where she runs daily, she says she hasn't gone running alone since, even in broad day light.

"It's really unfortunate situation that we can't go out during normal time of the day," said Clarkson.

While the recent arrest makes her feel better, she says it's been awake up call.

"Unfortunately we live in a world where there are those types of people that are out there. So you always have to be prepared, know your surroundings and know there are bad people out there. I don't trust anybody," said Clarkson.

You're advised to always have a plan in case someone tries to attack you while you are running, regardless of the time of day.
