Supt. Rick Smith says Hamilton schools poised for growth

Education is at the forefront of every business discussion that takes place in Hamilton County, and the public school district is at the center of all those discussions, according to Supt. Rick Smith.

In his annual State of the Schools address to county PTA members, he said there are some big plans on the drawing board that will be announced soon.   For now, he says new schools may soon be needed in the growing East Brainerd area, in addition to the new East Brainerd Elementary, which opens next fall.   He also praised the STEM school at Chattanooga State: science, technology, engineering and math.   It was recently expanded, and Smith says it's a huge success.

The superintendent also reiterated his support for a new K-12 building to replace the current Chattanooga School for Liberal Arts.   CSLA is now K-8, but he said the high-performing school needs to expand because of the long waiting list to get in, a deteriorating facility, and to relieve overcrowding at nearby East Brainerd area schools.

    Hamilton County School Board member Joe Galloway will not seek a third term as District 6 representative.   Galloway, a longtime Lookout Valley teacher and coach, told Eyewitness News, "I will continue to remain active in the schools, but I have grandchildren who are growing up, and I don't want to miss any of their events."
