KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A new project being done at the University of Tennessee aims to improve the safety of drivers and passengers who are in vehicles after dark.

A statement from the school says the project is being supported with a three-year $1.2 million grant from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The federal agency is tasked with public health and safety, and the statement says the high number of injuries and deaths from traffic accidents has been recognized as epidemic in proportion.

The project will focus on getting people to wear seat belts at night.

According to statistics, there are a greater number of fatalities or injuries among unbelted motorists at night compared to daytime hours.
