Dalton Police warn of fake officer phone scam

Posted: Updated:
DALTON, GA (WRCB) - The Dalton Police Department is warning residents of a scam after several reports of a caller claiming to be an officer.

Officials say the caller claims to be a lieutenant with the Whitfield County Sheriff's office; in one instance, the caller claimed to be Lt. Steve Richards.

The victim is advised to call a number purportedly for the sheriff's department and leave a message. The number leads to to an outgoing recorded message claiming to be the Whitfield County Sheriff's Office and saying that due to a high call volume the call could not be answered.  The message instructs callers to leave a message and their call would be returned by a deputy. Officers say the number is registered in Jasper, GA.

Dalton police say it's not clear the purpose of the scam but believe it's probably identity theft.

Officers will never never solicit money for the payment of fines or the dismissal of warrants over the phone. If you think you're a victim of a scam, call police.
