Bow season on black bears opens in TN

(WBIR) Hunters in Scott County are already taking advantage of the first time a new kind of bear hunting has been allowed there.

The black bear bow hunting season kicked off Saturday, and hunters had already recorded five black bears during the first weekend; two of them were harvested in Scott County.

Hunters can check in and register their kills at several locations, including the Country Store in Oneida. Cindy Jeffers, an employee of the store, said two hunters brought their bears to the store on Saturday. One of the bears weighed in at nearly 300 pounds.

Two more were registered just down the road at the Stop and Go.

Lathern Hull is one of the hunters who registered in Scott County. He said he shot the bear on his property in West Scott County. Hunters around the county are excited about the changes a black bear hunting season will bring to the area.

"When I was a kid growing up all we had to hunt was small game. Squirrels and rabbits. There was a few deer, but over the course of time things changed tremendously. We have turkeys, plenty of deer. Also we got bear." said Keith Marcum.

Hull said the bear he registered was field dressed at 175 pounds.

Byrd's Taxidermy said it's already working on one of the bears.

Jeffers said her store is excited to see what the hunters will continue to bring in. As for the hunters, state law only permits them to make one kill per season.

One hunter joked with his son about the size of the bear he got, but said he's happy to finally fulfill one a hunting goal.
