Ironman Chattanooga leaves competitors excited

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -  2,300 competitors jumped into the water Sunday morning to begin their journey to become an Ironman.

"This has been a long time in the making and we're ready for it,” said Brian Myrick, Race Director.

Ironman Chattanooga didn't scare these participants.

"It's great to do an Ironman in your hometown. It's like a dream come true," said John Wiygul.

Some too excited to sleep.

"I got here at midnight. I couldn't sleep, I was nervous. So I wanted to make sure I was the first in line," said Dana Maccorquodale.

She was the first, four hours before anyone else.

"The vibe and energy here is unbelievable, we've not seen that in a long time," said Myrick.

With 2,300 participating and more eager to, it leaves room for growth.

"We will look at this year's race and see how we do and how course capacity is and how we do with the event and judge from there," said Myrick.

For now, these athletes will swim, bike and run until they reach the finish line.

"I'll sleep good tonight," said Maccorquodale.

The cut off at the finish line will be tonight at 6 p.m.
