What would you expect a group known as the Band of Pirates to play for halftime? Yes, it is a pirate themed show for the students from South Pittsburg! You will absolutely love the variety: from The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything of Veggie Tales fame to Jolly Roger, a sea chant released in the mid-70's by former The Byrds front man Roger McGuinn, all the way to the stirring classical theme from the movie Pirates of the Caribbean.
We caught up with the band as they were on the road in the stands at Hixson. Second year Director Gabriel Lajas says he has great kids with lots of Pirate Pride. "We lost a lot of seniors last year," he said, "but we have a good leadership core and they are really coming together as a family." He added, "they are good players who are working really hard, every week." Lajas says the group is rebuilding, but they are committed to three competitions this year, including the Bradley Classic in Cleveland, TOMORROW (Saturday)!
Would you like to help the Band of Pirates have an awesome year? Call the South Pittsburg band room and ask about buying popcorn or insulated cups. These fundraisers help pay for the buses and the competition fees.
It is a wonderful thing in a high school band when the youngsters step up and do a great job. Add to that lots of support on Friday nights when the whole town comes out for football like they get at South Pittsburg, and you have the recipe for our Friday Night Football Band of the Week.
Congratulations and great success to the South Pitt Band of Pirates!
