College PD say workplace murder thwarted

HAMILTON COUNTY, TN (WRCB) - Collegedale Police say they may have avoided a workplace murder Friday afternoon.

Police were dispatched to 9404 Ooltewah-Industrial Drive at 2 p.m. on reports of a disorder with a weapon. 

A caller to the Hamilton County 911 center said a man was on the way to Hawker Powersource to kill an employee. 

Hamilton County 911 advised the Collegedale Police Department that the suspect was driving a blue Chevrolet truck and armed with a handgun. 

The dispatch center had additional information that the suspect had been drinking. Within  minutes of dispatch Collegedale Police pulled over a vehicle matching the description. 

The vehicle was on Ooltewah-Industrial drive pulling into the parking lot of Hawker Powersource. 

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Ray D. Stewart of Collegedale. Police tell Channel 3 that Stewart had a strong odor of alcoholic beverage coming from him.

Stewart was taken into custody for Driving Under the Influence. A loaded 9mm pistol, extra magazine and a box a 9mm bullets were located in the front passenger seat of the truck. 

Stewart is charged with Attempted Murder, Driving While Intoxicated and Possession of a Firearm While Intoxicated. 

He is being held on $260,000 bond at the Hamilton County Jail.
