Officer returns home after yellow jacket attack

Posted: Updated:

BROOKHAVEN, Ga. (AP) - A police officer has been released from a hospital after being attacked by a swarm of yellow jackets and stung dozens of times in the Atlanta suburb of Brookhaven.

Brookhaven police tell WXIA-TV (http://on.11alive.com/1srK0HX) that Officer John Ritch was released from the hospital Thursday and was back home recovering. Authorities say his police dog Grizz, stung at least two dozen times in the Wednesday ordeal, is also recovering.

Brookhaven police Maj. Brandon Gurley said the wasps were in the officer's pants leg, shirt sleeve, up his nose and in his month.

Authorities said the officer and the dog were pursuing a burglary suspect when they stepped into the nest full of yellow jackets.
