Ironman participants ready for possibility of rain

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) - The clock is tricking for this weekend's Ironman. Thousands of competitors and supporters arrived in town Thursday morning to check-in for Sunday's event.

Forecast models show a chance for spotty showers Sunday.

Christian and Leigh Ann Schultz made the trip from Alexandria, VA. It's his fourth Ironman and her second. The couple said they train in rain and bad weather so they'll be ready for whatever comes race day.

Leigh Ann said rain won't affect the 2.4 mile swim. But she said if it rains for the 112 mile bike ride, she'll let a little air out of the tires for better traction. Christian said he'll bring an extra pair of dry socks for the marathon finish.

"I just look to go out and have a good race. If I can have a best time ever, that'd be great but as I always say to my friends, race safe, race smart and have fun," Christian said. "It's a really great opportunity for people to come out of town and see Chattanooga and we're really happy to be a part of that."

Chattanooga is estimated to gain $7-9 million dollars of economic impact from Ironman. Chickamauga is also estimated to see some positive growth with an estimated 3 to 6 thousand spectators for the biking portion.
