Man swallows marijuana in attempt to avoid arrest

A McMinn County deputy stops a car going 57 m.p.h. in a 35 m.p.h. zone only to find a passenger covered in marijuana.

It happened Thursday night around midnight in Riceville on Highway 11.

When the deputy went to talk to the occupants of the car he saw the backseat passenger 19-year-old Queston Kymarland Simpson Knoxville with "a green, leafy substance all over his pants and in the back seat of the vehicle beside him."

The deputy had the occupants exit the car and executed a search.  A Hi-Point handgun was discovered in a backpack.

While speaking with the suspect, the deputy noticed his speech was slurry and he would not open his mouth.

When the suspect was ordered to open his mouth inside was a bag of pot.

Officers tried to get the suspect to spit out the bag, but he swallowed it instead.

Simpson was arrested and is charged with drug possession, tampering with evidence and unlawful possession of a firearm.

The gun was later found to be stolen and a charge of theft by possession was added to the other charges.

Simpson is being held on a more than $52,000 bond.
