Traffic stop yields 60 lbs of marijuana; suspect eludes police

A traffic stop in Marion County resulted in the discovery of 60 pounds of marijuana, but not the suspect, who fled from Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers late Thursday night.

THP Trooper Brent McCawley stopped a Lexus for a traffic violation on Interstate 24 westbound at mile marker 145 before midnight Thursday, according to a new release.

The male driver was unable to produce a driver license when the trooper requested, and would not get off his cell phone after repeated requests from the trooper.

Once the THP determined the driver's license had been suspended, the trooper tried to arrest the suspect, who left in the Lexus.

The trooper followed the suspect to exit 143, where he left the vehicle and escaped the troopers on foot.

An additional search using canines and assistance from a law enforcement official from Jackson County, Alabama ended without the suspect being captured.

When the trooper returned to the car, a search revealed a duffle bag with two vacuum sealed bags, each containing three large bails of marijuana for a total of six bails, totaling approximately 60 pounds.
