DALTON, GA (WRCB) - UPDATE: One person was arrested following a crash on Waugh Street Thursday morning.

Dalton police say 20-year-old Norberto Muniz Jr. crashed into a utility pole on Waugh Street just before 5 Thursday morning.

EMS stopped at the scene to check on Muniz, who tried to run away but was caught and detained.

Police say he was speeding and drunk when he lost control and hit the pole. He was treated for minor injuries and arrested. He faces charges of DUI and driving on a suspended license.

The pole was so badly damaged that Waugh Street was closed. Police will close it again after school traffic around 8 a.m. Friday to replace the pole.

Previous story:

Power lines are strewn across a roadway and a power pole is damaged after a car crash happened near Dalton High School, according to police.

Commuters are advised to avoid Waugh Street between Shugart Road and the western entrance to Manly Street. The area will remain closed off as a replacement pole is brought in from Atlanta to install.

Authorities believe the driver suffered non life threatening injuries. Dalton police suspect alcohol was a factor in the crash.
