Jasper sidewalks in need of repair

Posted: Updated:
JASPER, TN (WRCB) - Take a stroll around Jasper's square and you can't miss the small town feel.

“The trees, you'll notice, have larger plaques. They were a little more expensive,” Mayor Paul Evans said.

A few years ago, grant money paid for the sidewalks around the square to be redone. That's when folks bought plaques to remember and honor those who helped make Jasper what it is today.

“Not all of the trees are a problem. You can walk around and see which ones are popping the sidewalk,” he said.

As trees planted along the pathway grow, roots are stretching out, breaking through and beginning to make the sidewalk dangerous. Which is why Evans says something needs to be done.

“If it becomes a tripping hazard, then we're going to have to do something because then we're going to become liable as a town,” he added.

But Evans wants to hear from the community and those who pad for the plaques to help figure out a solution.

“These people paid money to honor someone, and we want to do what's best for the town,” he said.

And help preserve the beauty of this small Tennessee town.

A community meeting will be held for input at Jasper City Hall on November 10 at 5 p.m.
