Chattanooga Police work to improve relationship with Latino community

Posted: Updated:
CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) - The Chattanooga Police Department is implementing a slew of new initiatives and programs hoping to improve its relationship with the city's Latino community.

Only eight of the department's 470 sworn personnel are certified as Spanish interpreters.

And as of late last year, there were only 13 Hispanic officers.   However, as part of its efforts, the department will offer free Spanish-language refresher courses to employees.

Police Chief Fred Fletcher says each initiative is about learning to appreciate culture.
