(NBC News) - The shine's still on Apple.

Customers placed more than 4 million pre-orders for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in the first day of pre-orders, marking a first-day record, Apple announced Monday. That's twice the number of first-day iPhone 5 pre-orders Apple received in 2012.

Signs of high demand for the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were clear on Friday as the 5.5-inch Plus sold out early. Would-be buyers also complained of technical issues for Apple's online store.

But even those who were able to complete a pre-order may have to wait a while: "While a significant amount will be delivered to customers" starting September 19 (the first day that the new iPhones will be on sale) and throughout the month, "many" of the pre-orders won't be delivered until October, Apple said in its Monday announcement.

Those who can't wait can try to grab a phone on September 19 starting at 8 a.m. But that requires -- gasp! -- logging off the computer, hitting a physical Apple or wireless carrier store, and talking to a fellow human.
