Central upsets Marion in defensive battle, 7-0

HARRISON, TN (WRCB)--With apologies to Oprah Winfrey, the color purple was in full bloom Friday night at Etter Farmer Field, with the hometown Chattanooga Central Purple Pounders playing host to the Marion County Warriors and their perfect 3-0 record.
The Pounders certainly didn't roll out the red carpet for Marion's first year head coach Ricky Ross, but they did bring a stout defense to welcome the run-happy Warriors.
On one of the few Marion County passing plays of the game, Warriors quarterback Bryce Massengale threw a swing pass to Trey Phillips for a hook and lateral play, but Phillips coughed up the ball to the awaiting arms of Central's Sharrond Tatum, who scooped and scored the night's only touchdown. "it couldn't be without the team and the blocks," said Tatum, our Friday Night Football Player of the Game. " It was my corner, he made the play," said Tatum, giving credit to fellow defensive back D.J. Baker's tackle of Phillips.
" If we catch it, its six, you gotta take and chance every now and then," said Ross of the pivotal play.
From there, Central effectively shut down the Warriors' ground game, corralling Blake Zeman and company for much of the night as Central upsets Marion County, 7-0 the final.
" Our kids played hard, defensively, we shut them down, " said Central Head Coach Ryan Mallory afterward. " Offensively, we were able to move the ball but didn't execute down in the red zone as we wanted but we didn't put our defense in bad spots. Sometimes its about not screwing it up."
" I love our kids effort, you know they never back down and we knew coming in they were a good defensive ball club," said Ross in his first defeat at Marion. " I felt like they did some good things and their coaches deserve credit, obviously, we have things to work on."
