Community works together to design updates to the Imagination Station

Posted: Updated:
Community members put their pens to paper, jotting down ideas of what they want the new and improved Imagination Station playground to look like.

Many weren't excited about the plans at first, but Mayor John Turner says that's all starting to change now that the community is getting to help.

"I think we will continue to get positive attitudes after this meeting because they're getting to pick some of the swings and slides, that's what our democracy is all about," said Mayor Turner.

9-year-old Rebecca James-Catalano admits at first she wasn't fond of the idea of changing her favorite playground.

"I was not very excited about this because at first all I saw was plans and I thought, I do not want this, I was very upset," said Rebecca.

But she's warming up to the idea. "It's been very a lot of fun thinking of all of the ideas."

She brought plenty of them with her; she hopes hers make it into the final plan.

"Balance beams and bouncy things, things like that for exercise,” said Rebecca.

But the number one item on her list, keeping the tire swing.

"I get on the tire swing all the time and I love it," said Rebecca.

Mayor Turner says they're open to all ideas, but love to hear them from the younger crowd.

"We need to have the input from the children because they're the ones that are going to play on it. They may not want to play on what we think they do. So it is important that we have that feedback," said Turner.

Rebecca says she's no longer worried and knows the imagination station will still be a fun place to play.

"I'm actually feeling a lot better about it and actually am excited," said Rebecca. "All of these ideas put together can make a wonderful new thing."

The ideas from Tuesday night will all be compiled. The City Staff will then put together a proposed look for the playground and present it before the Commission towards the end of the month.

Mayor Turner says they will vote to move forward on the project during the first October meeting.

They hope to have the playground built by Christmas.

In the meantime, the playground will be opened until construction begins.
