'Books From Birth' program celebrates 10 years

Posted: Updated:

It's been 10 years since Tennessee's Governor's Books From Birth program began. Since 1994, more than 20 million books have been delivered - free - to children across the state.

The 10th anniversary is being celebrated with a three week bus tour. The books from birth bus is traveling across the state handing out books, plus getting new children enrolled.

One stop on the bus tour was the Amazon Fulfillment Center. Employees who are parents visited the bus on their lunch breaks and enrolled more than 60 new children to the free book program.

There's a Books From Birth program in every Tennessee county, mailing more than 200,000 books a month to children under five.

For the past 10 years, enrolled children have been getting books in the mail once a month, and reading them has shown higher literacy rates for those children.

"We found that children have better reading skills, stronger vocabulary," said President of the Governor's Books From Birth Foundation Theresa Carl, "They also understand, believe it or not, how to hold a book."

Amazon has been a supporter of the Books From Birth program for the past three years. The company donates $25,000 a year to be split among several Tennessee counties.
