KNOXVILLE, TN (WBIR) - The University of Tennessee fell on U.S. News & World Report's annual "Best Colleges" rankings despite a big push to crack the top 25 public universities.

UT dropped three spots from No. 47 to 50 on the "Top Public Schools" list. When the lists of public and private universities are combined, UT ranks No. 106, five spots lower than last year.

Four years ago, UT announced an ambitious goal to become a Top 25 university within a decade. Since then, the university has boosted efforts to recruit and retain students, hire high-quality faculty and staff, and improve research and academic rigor.

This year, UT tied with six universities in the ranking.
