TULLAHOMA, TN (AP) - The University of Tennessee Space Institute is celebrating its 50-year anniversary in Tullahoma this week.

The Space Institute was founded as a support arm of the U.S. Air Force Arnold Engineering Development Center in 1964, offering study and research in engineering, physics, mathematics and aviation systems.

Since its founding, the institute has awarded more than 2,000 graduate degrees, including more than 250 doctorates. Among the institute's alumni are nine current or former NASA astronauts, including NASA's Barry Wilmore, the next commander of the International Space Station.

Executive Director Robert Moore says the institute doesn't only focus on technical and scientific advances in flight but in the automotive industry as well.

Two-day anniversary festivities begin Thursday with fireworks, food and a run-walk.
