Charges filed in shooting death of Georgia toddler

Posted: Updated:

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. (AP) - Police say the aunt and uncle of a toddler who was fatally shot inside a house in Stone Mountain have been charged with reckless conduct and child cruelty.

DeKalb County police Capt. Stephen Fore tells The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (http://on-ajc.com/1xz3WLl ) the 2-year-old boy was found dead of a gunshot wound Monday morning.

Fore says 23-year-old Alexia Thomas and 25-year-old Detray Shiver are also both charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute. Fore says Shiver is charged with tampering with evidence after police found the gun in a storm drainage area near the house.

Both have been taken to the DeKalb County jail. It's unclear if they have attorneys.

Fore says the boy may have shot himself, but homicide charges could be filed if investigators determine the wound wasn't self-inflicted.
