NBC News - Raina the puppy and Ruuxa the cheetah cub have been besties at the San Diego Zoo for a while now, so it was no surprise when Raina was right there to comfort Ruuxa this week after he underwent surgery on his forelegs.

The zoo posted a video of Raina, a Rhodesian ridgeback puppy, sitting side-by-side with best friend Ruuxa after surgery on Wednesday on both of Ruuxa's forelegs because of a growth abnormality that veterinarians believed would start to cause him pain.

The cheetah cub had a pair of blue casts on as his puppy friend was right there to try to cheer him up as he came out of sedation.

"Raina appeared very concerned about Ruuxa when she saw he was sleeping and she couldn't wake him," Susie Ekard, animal training manager at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, said in a release accompanying the video. "She licked him and nuzzled him, and when he awoke, she lay with him and seemed very content to know her cheetah was okay."

The two animals have been together since they were barely a month old. The cheetah was paired with the puppy because Ruuxa has no siblings after being rejected by his mother, which can often be the case when the cub is not part of a larger litter.

Ruuxa is expected to make a full recovery from his surgery and get right back to hanging out with his good buddy, Raina.
