TN teacher finds 1923 diploma at hardware store

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A teacher rummaging through a hardware and thrift store found a 1923 diploma that will be put on display.

West Wilson Middle School teacher Michele Agee found the document while shopping with a friend at Alexandria Hardware Plumbing & Variety in Nashville this summer. The diploma, which was bestowed to a Gladys Wilkerson, is now at West Wilson Middle. Principal Wendell Marlowe intends to bring it to Mt. Juliet Principal Mel Brown.

The store's co-owner, Cathy Quarles, told The Tennessean ( ) she bought the diploma and other household items at a home in Smithville.

Quarles donated the framed diploma to the school.

Brown plans to display the diploma near the front of the school, which will allow students to see a piece of history.
