More rain could pose problems for rain-soaked Dalton

DALTON, GA (WRCB) -  Flash flooding and severe weather have kept public safety crews busy in Whitfield County.

“The 9-1-1 Center started getting a lot of calls of water in the roadways, people stalled in the water in the roadways,” Emergency Management Deputy Director Jeff Ownby said.

Ownby has worked in the industry for about 20 years. He wants folks to be ready because another round of rain could bring more problems for flood-prone areas in Dalton.

“Be weather-aware. We want people to tune into local media, social media and have a weather radio. We also have the Code Red system in Whitfield County,” he added.

One of the biggest dangers: Driving through standing water.

One car was swept into the side of a culvert because of high water. Ownby says rescuing stranded motorists also put crews in harmsway.

“If you don't have to take that risk, if you could be smarter about that type of stuff, it wouldn't fall back on public safety,” Ownby said.
