Employees at Volkswagen have formed their own union,
American Council of Employees

According to their website petitions are circulating for hourly and salary employees.  The goal of this group is to have an employee-created union and to help the company establish a Works Council within the confines of United States law.

They hope to get 31 percent of the hourly workers' signatures on the petition to present to Volkswagen where they must be recognized as a viable employee unit under the laws of the National Labor Relations Act. Signatures of salary-employees are also welcomed.

In February a majority of the VW workers rejected union representation by the UAW.   Since then the UAW has been trying to establish a local chapter for Volkswagen employees through Volkswagen officials in Germany.  UAW officials say it would be voluntary until a majority of the workers had joined.
