A devastating crash has left one North Georgia family without one loved one and waiting for another to come home.

CHATSWORTH, GA (WRCB) - "It was his trucking dog, she loved going places and he loved taking her," said Chris Sullivan.

Bella, a 2-year-old pit bull was known as Richard Sullivan's right-hand gal as he traveled up and down the interstate carrying loads on his tractor trailer.

"If he left the house without her, he would come home to a messy home," said Sullivan. "We would joke that he wouldn't even shower without her."

"She took care of dad and he took care of her," said Sullivan.

On August 3, Sullivan's trip ended in tragedy when he was killed in a collision involving 2 other semi-trucks.

"When your loved one is a truck driver, you always know there is that chance, but you just think it won't happen to you," said Sullivan.

Bella was in the passenger's seat.

Chris says it didn't take them long to start to wonder what happened to his dad's beloved dog after the accident.

So his wife spent the next few days trying to find her.

Bella was staying at an animal hospital where she was being treated for cuts and bruises and a hurt leg which was later amputated.

"It was just an amazing moment to realize she could survive something," said Sullivan.

Her survival is the only good that has come from a bad situation.

"I just want to get her home and give her a hug," said Sullivan.

For a family whose father meant so much to them, they wait for his favorite pal to return home, bringing something special back with her.

"I cannot wait to see her because I know how big of a part of my dad she really was," said Sullivan. "It'll be like having a little piece of my dad."

Bella is scheduled to arrive in Chatsworth on Thursday.

The Animal Aid Foundation is raising money to help pay for vet bills and other items Bella will need, as well as the cost to bring her back home.
