UPDATE: Suspect in $60k school vandalism to face more charges

HAMILTON COUNTY, TN (WRCB) - The suspect accused of vandalizing a local school, will face more charges, for allegedly assaulting an officer, and causing damage to his hospital room.

Police say 22-year-old Aaron Roden is now in police custody, after a brief stay at the hospital.

Roden was arrested Tuesday morning after police found him inside Westview Elementary School. He was immediately taken to the hospital when their sheriff said he spent two nights to come down off drugs. He was officially booked in jail Thursday morning when deputies served warrants at the hospital.

"Obviously his choice of the school -- he didn't have anything against the school, acting out of emotions he wasn't coping with internally very well. Drugs can exacerbate that, make it more difficult to deal with," said local Psychologist Dr. Stephen Bradshaw.

Police say Roden used bricks to smash through windows to get into the school Tuesday morning. The affidavit states he threw a fire extinguisher and a printer at deputies before he was tazed.

The damage was so extensive, classes were cancelled Tuesday. Roden now faces two charges of aggravated assault, burglary, and vandalism over 60-thousand dollars.

"It wasn't like a cry for help but it was certainly something inside of him that he needs help in managing," said Dr. Bradshaw. "To learn how to respond rather than how to react.
