BOAZ, AL (AP) - Boaz officials have fired the city's fire chief for using a pen to record interviews without employees' knowledge.

Fire Chief Mike Sparks was terminated Monday after city officials said he violated the city's employee handbook ( The Gadsden Times reports that Sparks used the device to record July interviews with four candidates for captain.

Sparks says he made the recordings because he has difficulty remembering things.
