Hamilton County GOP wins big on Election Night

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -  There were a lot of cheers at Hamilton County GOP Headquarters on Election Night with wins across the board in the county races.

The public defender's race was a heated one.

"It feels nice to give voters the chance to make a new selection and they actually do," said Republican winner, Steve Smith. "I'm humbled by it."

Smith, of the District Attorney's office, beat 25-year Democrat incumbent Ardena Garth by nearly 14,000 votes.

"From when you're a little kid, your parents teach you not to say good things about yourself and not talk bad about other people. So that's what I tried to do, and maybe sometimes it doesn't work, but at least in this race it did," Smith said.

"I'm very humbled by the confidence that's been placed in me by the people of Hamilton County," said Republican Vince Dean, who unseated Democrat incumbent Gwen Tidwell in the Criminal Court Clerk's race. Dean won by more than 4,000 votes.

"It's been a long campaign and it's been a hard campaign," said Dean.

Patsy Hazlewood won the GOP ticket in the 27th District race for State Rep. and will face Democrat Eric McRoy in November.

County winners of Thursday's race will be sworn into office on Sept. 2.
