Long delays force Cleveland pool to open at end of summer

CLEVELAND, TN (WRCB) - As many students are heading back to school, one community pool is opening its doors for the first time. After a summer-long wait, Mosby Pool in Cleveland is finally open.

"This community's been waiting all summer for the pool," pool manager Matt Huff said on Monday.

"Every day we'd drive by, and I'd like, always tell my mom that I can't wait until that pool opens," said 8th-grader Caleb Farris.

"This is actually the first time of the year being here at the pool," said Eli O'Dell.

"I was waiting for like a hundred days to open this up," said seven-year-old Katelynn O'Dell.

"The people who we contracted it out to from Atlanta took a really long time to get everything going," said Huff. Rainy weather also delayed construction on the half-million dollar swimming pool, he said.

Ribbon-cutting was delayed an extra 30 days pending approval of state health department codes. The long wait fueled a handful of parent complaints.

"(There were) calls all summer, pushing for the pool to be open. We were just doing the best we could, and opened it as soon as we could," Huff said.

"It was just really fun when it opened," said third-grader Jakobe Vonner, whose first day of school is on Tuesday.

The "back to class" countdown is on for other districts in Bradley County.

To make up for lost time, Huff said the pool won't close until 8 p.m. on school days. The pool will stay open through Labor Day, as long as the warm weather sticks around.
