UPDATE: Gas leak forces evacuation

UPDATE: Businesses on Central Avenue were evacuated as a safety precaution Wednesday morning after construction workers ruptured a two-inch gas line at E. 16th Street and Central Avenue.

The Chattanooga Fire Department responded and evacuated six businesses as Chattanooga Gas Company workers dug up the break in the gas line and contained the leak, according to a news release from Bruce Garner, the Public Information Director of the Chattanooga Fire Department.

PREVIOUS STORY: Chattanooga Police and Fire Departments are on the scene of a gas leak, located near the intersection of East 16th Street and Central Avenue.

The Chattanooga Gas Company has crews on site working to determine the source of the leak.

Traffic in the area is affected, with Central Avenue closed.

No injuries have been reported.
