UPDATE: Amincola Highway partially closed after chemical spill

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE: A tanker carrying a solution of 50% caustic soda spilled about 20 gallons of the liquid onto Amincola Highway near the entrance to Chattanooga State Monday morning.

A news release from the Chattanooga Fire Department indicated that the hatch atop the tanker had been left open, causing the liquid to slosh out as the tanker turned onto Aminicola.

Police and fire teams were called to the scene, and once the chemical was identified, cleanup began.

Amincola Highway was closed to allow hazmat teams to work safely. No injuries were reported.

No word yet on when Amnicola Highway will be re-opened to traffic.

PREVIOUS STORY: Amincola Highway was closed in both directions near Chattanooga State as haz-mat crews clean up a chemical spill.

Students and visitors to the college should use the West entrance in front of the CBIH building, or the entrance/exit by the Chickamauga Dam.

The spill should be cleared early this afternoon, according to a news release from Chattanooga State.

The Chattanooga Fire Department sent out an update from their Twitter account "Haz-Mat techs say tanker left top lid open. While making turn @ Chatt State, caustic liquid spilled out. No injuries. #ChattFire."
