New phone scam - Hint: your family is not being held hostage by the mafia

Posted: Updated:
CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) - The Chattanooga Police Department warns of a new phone scam in the area.

The scenario is this:

A person receives a phone call, alerting them a family member has been in a minor accident with a member of the mafia, or someone alluding law enforcement.

In each instance reported, the person was told that their family member was being held hostage and he or she would have to wire money to get their loved one released.

Chattanooga police advise that in each incident, the person’s family member had not been in an accident. They have determined that the story has been fabricated to extort money from the victim.

If you receive a call like this, please contact the Chattanooga Police Department at (423) 698-2525.
