Police: Woman beats man, drags him into Tennessee River

Posted: Updated:

A woman is accused of beating a man until he was unconscious and then submerging him in the Tennessee River, according to Chattanooga police.

Cierra Hix, who had just celebrated her 21st birthday a little more than an hour before the attack, faces a charge of attempted first degree murder.

It's unclear what led Hix to attack the 29-year-old man Wednesday morning.

Hix was drinking with the victim and a couple of other homeless people when she reportedly attacked him underneath Veterans Bridge.

Police found the victim, Jeff Vance, standing in the middle of Frazier Avenue with signs of head trauma including blood coming from his mouth and nose as well as a swollen eye.

He was still soaking wet when first responders took him to a local hospital.

A witness told police that Hix attacked Vance by repeatedly punching him until he became unconscious. She then grabbed his legs and dragged him into the river. Then she placed her hands around his neck, choking him and holding his head under water for about 10 to 15 seconds, according to the affidavit.

A witness rescued Vance by pulling him out of the water and administering CPR.

Hix stayed at the scene for another hour and then began to attack Vance again. She threw his backpack in the river before walking away.

Police caught up to her and placed her under arrest on Georgia Avenue.

Once in custody, she continually banged her head against a patrol car window. At the jail, staff strapped her to a chair and placed a mask over her face.

As of Thursday, she remained in custody.

Her next court date is set for June 27 before Hamilton County Sessions Court Judge David Bales.
