Group collects famous signature for fundraiser

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) - A local dog rescue group has been collecting a few signatures that you might recognize.
It's all in an effort to raise money to pay for medical expenses when foster Maltese dogs are brought in.

"It's just been really exciting to go to the mail box every day and think oh I hope I get somebody today," said Cynthia Brundage.

It's taken Brundage two years to collect dozens of signatures from celebrities onto pieces of cloth that will soon be made into a quilt with the hopes of selling it and using the money for the Southern Comfort Maltese Rescue.

"I saw another rescue had done this and they got 20 signatures," said Brundage.

The quilt is filled with dozens of names that you may recognize,  like Whoopi Goldberg,  Johnny Depp, and Julian Lennon, all signed by them.

"It's been a hard to get responses, I’ve learned what kind of approaches have worked," said Brundage.

After much hard work she now has 68 signatures in hand.

She tells Channel 3 she has been thrilled to receive all of them, however, the one from Maya Angelou now has a whole new meaning.

"She's so gracious, she not only signed but sent me a copy of her book as well," said Brundage.

Since Angelou's death, Brundage says the little treasure has gained value.

"When I read it I hear her go, I rise, I rise. I just think that is so great. I'll miss seeing her on TV," said Brundage.

"She was such a great humanitarian that I don't think people realized that she had such a soft spot in her heart for animals," said Brundage.

Something they both share.

"It's all for the dogs,” said Brundage.

Now Angelou's love for animals will help add value to a quilt to help take care of them.

The quilt is expected to be finished by the end of the year, they are still waiting for about a dozen more signatures.

The quit will be auctioned off and the money will go towards Southern Comfort Maltese Rescue.
