Police investigating armed robbery in Athens park

Posted: Updated:
ATHENS, TN (WRCB) - Athens Police are investigating an apparent armed robbery in Cook Park. Neighbors said it's a popular spot for children, families and church groups. Police are still looking for the man who allegedly pulled a gun on a woman at the park on Friday night.

According to a police report, a man in a green hoodie walked up to a woman's car, asking if she had any marijuana. The woman said no, and the man, who told her his name was "Joe", asked where he could "find some weed."

When the victim again replied 'no', the suspect allegedly pulled out a gun, aiming it and saying, "Well, I know you have money in there."

The woman started honking her horn. The suspect ran off, and several witnesses in the park heard a gunshot. Nobody was injured, but nearby residents said they're surprised.

"There hasn't been any trouble for years," said Naomi Johnkins, who has lived in the neighborhood for 25 years.

"I think it's a nice place, and I think it's a safe place for the kids," Johnkins said. She lives right across the street from the park. "As long as I'm here, I'm gonna watch out for them."

Athens Police declined to comment on the case. If you have any information about the robbery, call Athens Police.
