The pros weren’t the only ones setting records on bikes during the Memorial Day weekend in Chattanooga.

A “gift” of free passes to Bike Chattanooga allowed residents and visitors pedal a record number of miles on the city’s bike sharing system.

Volkswagen of America and
sponsored the free weekend passes, which gave 1,187 people complimentary 24-hour passes on the system, according to an Outdoor Chattanooga new release.

The passes, which normally are $6 for 24 hours, let people take a total of 2,096 trips.

During the two days, May 25 and 26, the record number of Bike Chattanooga riders:

  • Burned over 55,000 calories
  • Kept 72,000 lbs. of carbon out of the air
  • Traveled 9,911 miles, more than the distance of a round trip from Chattanooga to Paris
