Soldier surprises kids at Graduation party

Posted: Updated:
DADE COUNTY, GA - It was a simple game of murder mystery for a group of students, but the game quickly went emotional when the murderer was finally discovered.

"It's kind of surreal, I wasn't expecting him. It's crazy he popped out of a box at me," said Cori Clark. "I was expecting it to be one of my friends jumping out trying to scare me."

It was a day Cori and Timothy Clark will never forget.

"Not seeing him for so long it was emotional,  just getting to see his face again, probably the best thing ever," said Cori.

Sgt. Joseph Clark is in the Tennessee Army National Guard and spent 9 months in Afghanistan. He says he's missed out on so much, including his daughter's entire senior year of high school.

"My daughter has had the most amazing year that I've not been here for," said Sgt. Clark. "She's accomplished things this year that I would have never thought possible."

He said he wanted to make sure he was there for the most important part of it and his wife Angela knew the perfect opportunity.

"I've wanted to surprise them and to get to see that is one of the greatest moments I've had,” said Angela.

Angela says it wasn't easy though creating a murder mystery, nor keeping it a secret from everyone, but she knew her kids would figure it out if she wasn't creative and she was right.

"I watched those surprise videos at home thinking they go and surprise them at graduation so I thought maybe if they do surprise me it will be at graduation," said Cori.

Sgt. Clark says while the last few months have been hard.

"They've been here doing what they have to do and I've been doing what I have to do," said Sgt. Clark.

But now the only thing they're going to do is be together.

"Just talk to him and just spend time with my dad," said Cori. "Spend some time with him, just talk about what's happened in the past year or so."

Sgt. Clark will spend the next few days with his family to attend his daughter's graduation before going to Texas to finish out his tour.
