UPDATE: (WBIR) A man, accused of killing three people in Florida, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a standoff in West Knox County.Law enforcement had closed Parkwest Boulevard at Cedar Bluff during the standoff at the Days Inn but now have reopened the road.
David Eugene Smith is accused of killing three people in Lakeland, Fla., according to the Polk County Sheriff's Department.
The 27-year-old appears to have shot himself, and crews took him to a hospital, the Knox County Sheriff's Office said during a press conference. He was later pronounced dead at UT Medical Center. ___________________________________________________________________________________
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Authorities say the suspect in a Florida triple homicide has been captured after he called 911 saying he wanted to die at the hands of law enforcement.
Knox County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Eddie Biggs told the Knoxville News Sentinel that David Eugene Smith identified himself as the man wanted in connection with the shooting deaths of two women and a man near Lakeland, Florida, over the weekend.
He was captured in his motel room, suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His condition was not immediately available.
Polk County, Florida, sheriff's spokeswoman Donna Wood says one of the victims was Smith's sister, 31-year-old Danyala Smith. The other two victims were 25-year-old Nikosi Williams and 28-year-old Miranda Mims. Authorities still are investigating the relationship between the three victims.
