USA Cycling National Championships underway

CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) - The USA Cycling National Championships kicked off Monday morning in Chattanooga.

The women started at 9 a.m. on a 64-mile course. The men take off at 1:30 p.m. on a 102.8 mile course.

Fans and family set up across the course that takes the cyclists from downtown Chattanooga, to the North Shore, even Lookout Mountain. Jay  Rockholt has a cousin in the men's race. He brought his kids River and Emmie down from Nashville.

"We came down to be a part of the action, watch the bike race and hang out, have a good time," said Jay Rockholt. "It's a big deal. I don't get to see this level of competition very often. Being that it's a couple hours away, I'll definitely come down to be a part of it."

Spectators at the race were asked to fill out a survey with questions to gauge the economic impact and interest in sponsors.

"So far, we're finding that this is a great event and people are coming here specifically for this event so these are dollars that we wouldn't see if it wasn't for this race," said Dr. Angeline Scheinbaum, Assoc. Professor at the University of Texas - Austin.

While some businesses and restaurants were inconvenienced by all the road closures around town, others like Lupi's Pizza got creative. The local pizza joint drove their food truck to the race and set up shop to feed hungry race-goers.
