La Vergne band students, parents upset after director let go

Posted: Updated:

Students and parents at La Vergne High School don't want to let go of their popular assistant band director.

They say the assistant director didn't have his employment renewed for next school year, and the shakeup caused the current band director to request a transfer earlier than expected.

Dozens of people gathered on campus Friday morning, and parents say the program will suffer with both instructors gone.

"He's the link to making this transition smooth for everybody. He's the link. He's the soul to these kids, and these kids trust him already and they know what he's like," said La Vergne band booster Paige Robinson.

Those students met privately with La Vergne's principal Friday in the cafeteria.

They say marching drills had already begun to replace graduating seniors.

"What's happened is just, it's touched everyone. And we all want to make a change, and we want him back, because this man coming in this year has been the glue. He has been the heart and the soul," said rising senior Kayla Kelly.

The district says the principal made the decision not to renew the assistant director's contract, and he was not a tenured teacher.

Administrators also say the band program will continue and is not in jeopardy.
