CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -
The risk of a leak in the transmission oil cooler has forced Volkswagen to order U.S. dealers to stop selling 2014 Volkswagens equipped with automatic transmissions and VW’s most common engine, the 1.8 liter EA888.
According to the Automotive News website, the mandatory stop order applies to 2014 Volkswagen Passats made in Chattanooga, and 2014 Jetta and Beetles made in VW’s Mexico plants.
VW spokesman Scott Vazin Automotive News the problem arose when a supplier changed the specifications of an O-ring linking the transmission oil cooler to the transmission.
The German automaker has not disclosed the number of vehicles affected by the stop order memo, but Vazin said it is about 25,000.
Volkswagen has not issued a recall for affected vehicles that may have already been sold to customers.
The memo was mentioned earlier in the day by automotive enthusiast website Jalopnik.
