ONLY ON 3: Cable repairman admits to stealing drugs. money from customers

Posted: Updated:
MARION COUNTY, TN (WRCB) -

A cable repairman has been charged with stealing prescription drugs and cash from homes while on the job. It's happened at several homes -- and mostly elderly customers -- across Marion County.

Police said Travis Stewart, 26, had been working for Charter Communications for more than a year. He was a familiar face to customers like Pamela Webb, who just assumed he was stopping by to help.

"He'd been here before," Webb said. "It's still just a shock to me that he took my pain medicine that I need."

Webb said she didn't think much when a Charter Communications service tech knocked on her door in Kimball last week. Even though her connection was fine and she never called for help, she trusted Stewart, who had helped her out before.

"He was just checking the area for problems," Webb said. That's what he told her, at least.

Webb recalled Stewart sitting down next to her, briefly checking the remote, which sits on the same table as her high-power painkillers.

"Evidently, that's when he palmed my bottle of pain medicine," she said.

Within minutes, the repairman was gone -- and so was Webb's medication. She called 911 and police stopped Stewart driving his company vehicle in Jasper. Inside, police found Webb's pills, along with other stolen prescription drugs.

"He didn't admit to anything at the time, but later did admit and said he had a problem," said Kimball Police Lt. Gregory Rowe.

Stewart told police he'd been stealing customers' cash and prescriptions for the last month. Several victims were notified in Kimball and South Pittsburg.

"He gave me a couple other places he had been to and stole their medications also," said South Pittsburg Ofc. Nathan Billingsley.

He said some elderly customers didn't even know they were victims.

"They trusted the cable guy," Billingsley said. "He was in a cable vehicle with a cable uniform on, and they let him in their homes."

It now has folks like Webb thinking twice about being so trusting.

"I'm still in shock over it," she said. "It's hard to believe somebody would do that. That you knew."

Stewart was charged with multiple counts of theft, burglary and drug charges. He has since bonded out of the Marion County Jail.

Charter Communications told Channel 3 that Stewart resigned on Wednesday, which was the day of his arrest.
