CHATTANOOGA, TN (WRCB) -

A southbound Norfolk Southern train with four locomotives and 90 loaded coal cars struck struck an 18-wheeler near Wauhatchie Pike at the base of Lookout Mountain Thursday morning.

The accident took place near the intersection of Highway 11/Birmingham Highway and Wauhatchie Pike.

The big rig's trailer was nearly torn in half, and was left in a crumpled heap alongside the railroad tracks, about 50 yards away from the point of the impact.

The cab was on one side of the tracks, and the trailer is on the opposite side.

Emergency responders tell Channel 3 that the truck's trailer was empty, as the driver had just made a delivery before the collision.

The driver was taken to a nearby hospital for examination and treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The crossing did have warning lights, but was not equipped with crossing arms that are automaticall lowered prior to a train crossing the roadway.
